the swingiest of the swing states. if the romney/ryan ticket has a hope of winning in colorado and other battleground states, they are going to have to explain the math. they can't carry it for 36 days without doing so. chris wallace made an attempt. i bet you the debate on wednesday night makes an attempt. this time 50 to 60 million people will be watching. if mitt romney doesn't give more details, he's going to look bad. >> why are they running with this new strategy of attacking the president on national security? >> well, as you said, it's kind of throw it against the wall and see what sticks strategy. they haven't been able to compare the president to a man who many think of as not a successful democratic president, that is jimmy carter, on domestic affairs. they tried, but they haven't succeeded. so they are desperate to make that carter analogy any way they can. they are probing for weaknesses in the record. what they should have been doing all along is running against president obama's record on the economy. that's what they should have down. the latest "washington post" poll sho

of the united states, governor romney. i am so proud of this ticket. that me tell you i am also proud of paul ryan. i wore my miami university tie. here is what we have to do. we know the race is going to come down to the wire. we have always known it is going to be close. it is going to come down to last. it is going to come down to one states, oh -- >> io. >> we have to do our job. absentee ballots. if you'd have a friend who does not have an absentee ballot, tell them how to apply and get it. it is easy. make sure your parents have their ballots. if you have a daughter or a son in college, e-mail them, i did that to my daughter last night. she came back to me within about five minutes. dad, i have already done it and applied. that is what we need to do. when we think about this election, it really is about our kids and grandkids, where do we want to be in the year 2016? imagine the difference. one person has one division and what made this country and the other has another vision, it comes down to the simple question, who do you think bill to this country? who built it? was that the govern

with mitt romney. so the obama camp feels good. the issue would be right for the picking, a state that president obama carried in 2008 with all of the economic problems it should be a state that is easy to carry but it is still neck and neck giving the obama camp hope that some of the key battlegrounds where mitt romney should be breaking through, they believe he is not. >>heather: thank you, live from las vegas. >>gregg: the race for the white house entering a critical phase now. we are approaching the first presidential election. look at the latest fox news poll showing president obama holding his lead over governor romney. we will bring in our campaign insiders. representative john leboutillier, a former republican congressman. and pat caddell, former pollster for jimmy carter. and doug schoen former pollster for bill clinton. doug, the numbers you saw on the screen, since the conventions, the president has gained four and romney has lost two, a swing of six points. >> that is where the race is. there are some polls in the swing states showing outsize leaps for obama the ink th

's going on. the good news for mitt romney is that you look at those polls and see that on individual state polls and as it goes for independence. mitt romney still enjoys an advantage in several key places among independents, and that has to be encouraging for his campaign even as they get all of these bad polls put out on their head. he won one how does this change, if at all, mitt romney's strategy. some are arguing, including charles krauthammer, that romney needs to do well in the last five weeks. >> it will not surprise you for me to say that charles is very smart. here is the deal. the independents think the system is broken and they want to hear big solutions, bold ideas, because they think that the country is dreadful. you heard him when he was at valley forge military academy. he was not talking in muted tones. he was talking in big and bold tones in what he believes in the middle east and has to carry that message over to the economic argument, the deficit spending argument, and he has to bring a really hardball -- a hard fastball when he shows up at that debate on wednesday. meg

romney win the presidency without the power of these swing states? >> no. and by the way, check out this incredible video. a tornado touches down, ripping through homes and buildings. it is all caught on camera. >> wow. a busy morning ahead. our guests include michele flournoy, co-chair of the obama campaign nation security advisory committee. tiki barber, former player for the new york giants, rudy giuliani, former new york city mayor, ben cohen, co-founder of ben & jerry's ice cream and singer cyndi lauper. >> it is wednesday, september 26th. "starting point" beginning right now. first we have some news just in to cnn. two american soldiers in afghanistan were killed today in an attack by a suicide bomber. the attack happened in logar province just south of kabul, afghanistan's capital. a spokesman for the governor of logar said the suicide bomber detonated himself during a military operation. he also said one american soldier was injured. we will have more on this developing story as details come in. >>> a big day here in new york. iran's controversial leader will deliver his fin

to crush governor romney in romney's home state, by 25 to 30 points. that's an enormous hill for scott brown to climb. he raises a point of vulnerability with elizabeth warren's candidacy. the native americanlaimack fothn gn about that. his -- the danger for scott brown in this is that as jim again pointed out, he has a very high favorability factor in the state. but he's changing his personality now in the minds of izh rren on this. and it'll be interesting how it plays out. i think it's jump ball right now. >> stick around and watch our next segment, we're going to replay and relive the nightmare of the packer game last night. thanks so much for the politico playbook. the officials a month ago were calling children's pee-wee games, it wasn't that bad. and the finish tt has jim vandehei cursing the officials. it very difficult for romney to put together a coalition that can take the state. colorado has been fairly close so again obama mabey looks like a fairy or four-point lead on average read a lot of demographic change. you can see the minority eligible voters have gone up by three percentage points and working-class voters in 2008 have gone down by three percentage points. again it doesn't appear that romney is able to turn the demographics tie in his favor. he's not doing much better among the white working-class voters according to the polls i've seen. he's made some progress on the outside margin that obama got 14 points in 2008 among the college graduate voters but he's not making nearly enough voters to take the state and if you break it down geographically the denver metro area is about half the vote in the state but that looks very similar in the polling data as it did in 2008. finally, the poster child for demographic change in the united states and how it's been shifted pretty rapidly over time as the great state of nevada. obama is running ahead of though not nearly as far as he di

obama in some states and more votes from romney in other states. a wasted vote it is a vote for somebody you don't believe in. i make a pitch that everybody waste their vote on may and i am the next president of the united states. i would do a good job at it. host: richard from new york, republican, thank you for waiting. caller: i appreciate what you did with that one debate when you mentioned ron paul. you and him what had been a good team. the only other choice b3wi esides ron paul is you. they said the less of two evis evil. still an all this promoting the homosexual agenda. we have to have a change. ron paul was the grandfather of the tea party. i hope to see you on the show. i appreciate you running. guest: well, thank you. i support marriage equality. i think marriage equality is a constitutionally guaranteed act, on par with the civil-rights of the 1960's. host: john from illinois. caller: the only problem that i have is about the tax issue. the reason why i say that is our taxes in this country have never been set up to be fair. what they were set up for was that the rich were s

% over mitt romney. since nevada was so hard hit with these economic woes this is the kind of state where mitt romney has to break through. megyn: we'll bring you this presidential debate live. it will be hosted by yours truly along with bret baier. we hope you will join us for that and the post-game analysis right here on fnc. a growing debate over the money we send to egypt after one congresswoman puts $450 million of u.s. aid to that country on hold. september 12 we watched mobs in cairo tear down the american flag and replace it with a black islamic flag of their own. as we learn $450 million is just a portion of what we send their way questions are coming up about what we want to do before we send any more taxpayer dollars overseas. joining me now, former ambassador to the united nations and fox news contributor, john bolton. this congresswoman has blocked the $450 million. she says given the relationship we have with them i don't know if we are justified in forking this over immediately. >> i think having congress show how outraged it is about it egyptian government's behavior is a

the romney camp, as good news, chris, since he is shown as trail anything a lot of these swing state polls as well. >> well, certainly it's not good news if you're president obama. if that's true, if you really have 18% persuadable voters, this comes after fife months -- five months of the most stained, negative attack, most personal barrage against a candidate by an incumbent president that we've ever seen. if there's still 18% of the people that say, well, you know, i'm hope to this guy, i'm open to hear what he has to say, that would include some romney voters who might be open to the president, but when you'd have an incumbent,ou'd expect that much persuade about would be good news for the challenger, that the president hasn't been able to convince all the persuadable voters that mitt romney is, in fact, a vampire. megyn: now, we saw during the republican presidential primary that these debates really can have an effect. candidates really were forced to leave the race based on their debate performances occasionally during that republican primary, so it's no accident that we have both s

voters this will be his chance to cut through the noise and speak directly to voters. >> governor romney down at least in nine recent swing state polls. most regard wednesday's debate at his last best chance to win over voters. how is his message or perhaps even his tone. how is it going to be different wednesday than what we've seen and heard so far? >> look, i mean i think he's going to get a chance to speak directly to voters. he's going to talk about this is a clear choice in this election. do people want a romney/ryan ticket that is going to look to create prosperity and jobs and upward mobility for americans? or do they want more of the past four years that they have seen, which hasn't been very bright and it's been obama's failed economic policies that haven't been working. so i think this is great opportunity for governor romney to outline his plans. i don't think wednesday is a make-or-break night. i think he'll do great and i think you'll see the numbers in the polls tighten. >> i want to call your attention to some critics of the campaign on the right and the left. on fox news

the state, day after day, about how the economy there is really growing and booming. and romney doesn't necessarily, you know, say the same thing. it's kind of mixed messages. and he also hasn't come up with a really strong, coherent response, to the auto bailout. he says let detroit go bankrupt. there's a supply chain, you know, a lot of manufacturers in ohio. the obama campaign talks about this day after day after day after day and romney campaign doesn't really have much of an answer for it. romney's going to ohio after his new york visit to join up with paul ryan for a bus tour. they know how important it is and they definitely have some work to do, john. >> all right. thank you, peter hamby in washington. the romney ohio bus tour begins today. thanks very much. >>> 35 minutes past the hour. the fbi will investigate the controversial shooting death of a disabled man. this was by police in houston. on saturday, officers were called to a group home for mentally ill people. responding to reports that a wheelchair-bound resident was acting aggressively. police say the double amputee a

romney thanks to the negative ads romney's campaign has been outspent two to one in swing states. in the debate romney can talk to the voters, give specifics and contrast that with the president's record. for "cbs this morning," i'm jan crawford in denver. >>> both candidates are trying to protect themselves for any verbal slipups. as bill plante reports, that kind of moment doesn't happen very often. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, norah. if the conventional wisdom is the president is leading and romney needs a game-changer, what may the debate do to allow that? ever since the first debate ever in 1960 and the regular debates which began in 1976, these-bates produced a memorable number of gaffs but few instances which really changed the outcome of an election. in 1980 president jimmy carter led governor ronald reagan in the polls, but one line from reagan in their only debate put carter on a defensive and became the mantra for future challengers to an incumbent. >> are you better off than you were four years ago? >> reporter: in 1984, reagan, now the incumbent, did it a

romney in key battleground states a democratic pollster and consultant who worked for jimmy carter says finding the right sample to survey can be tricky. >> we know from the exit polls and others is that republicans tend to respond to the polls less than often times particularly from news organizations less than do democrats. >> reporter: in 1988, george bush managed a huge swing. gallup had michael dukakis leading by 17 points after the convention. the loss to bush by 7%. a former are clinton pollster is questioning the assumptions being made in today's polls. >> these polls are assuming that you have the same high level of african american, latino and young people vote in 2012 that you had in 2008. >> obama campaign senior advisor david axel rod told fox "public polls are widely variant in their sampling and methodology so hard to make the case when they all point in one direction they are all wrong but we are planning for a close race as we always have." another democratic strategist offered this assessment. >> this thing can move back and forth three and four times between now and n

% of latino vote. romney need at least a quarter to a third of latino vote toeshs competitive in states like colorado where the debate is and that kind of thing. real quickly because i want to get to donna on this issue. what does he need to do to appeal to latino voters? >> i think latino voters need to know more about mitt romney. they know very little. precious little about him. the little they do know they don't like. he has begun to change his tone. ep needs to continue doing latino outreach and doing events, doing interviews, doing media, pouring money and resources into paid media and to outreach efforts. >> donna to that point, romney has actually moved closer to president obama on immigration issues just very recently saying he's not is going to rerocky the visas, deport young illegal immigrants under the new law here. does that present a problem to the president if he moves close center >> look we know mitt romney has a pension for etch-a-sketch. he likes to erase his previous statements and previous support for sb-1070 show me your papers in arizona. he's turned his back on latino

a moderate or conservative he's closer to your values she is. >> bill: the state of the race for governor romney, how is he doing? >> he's got to become more aggressive, become clear, and stick to issues in a firm way. they've allowed the national media to define this campaign for 2 1/2 weeks, and that is an enormous disadvantage if you're a republican. i mean, republicans in the general election have to wake up every morning and say, okay, the obama team includes virtually every reporter i'm going to meet. and you've got to campaign in that context. so you've got to be so clear and so consistent that you reach beyond them. if you don't do that, you'll stay in permanent trouble. >> bill: many people look at debate as being probably the linchpin for this race. do you agree? >> yes. i think in the first debate -- my newsletter at human events coming out tomorrow will walk through this. i think at the first debate, romney has to come across as capable of being president, as a legitimate alternative to obama, and as somebody who's not afraid to say what he really believes, even face-to-face w

challenger has a benefit when they get up on the stage against the president of the united states. the debates level the playing field. they put you on the stage in an equal footing. i think mitt romney comes into the debate with an advantage because of that. i think the question in this race, all campaigns are different and i think in this race, this is very much of a choice election. i think people see very different visions for the future between these two candidates and my guess is, when we get out of the debates they are going to continue to see the two visions and right now they're picking barack obama's vision. i think in 2004, it was more of a referendum on bush and i think ultimately people decided that the referendum they wanteded to stay with the incumbent. i think this election is a little different. >> i'm not sure you got to the meat of my question, why your guy won the debates but lost eat lex. >> well, again, i think he won the debates because when standing on the stage with the president of the united states and you give a decent performance you're going to -- the

to say that about libya. on the second question, pertaining to governor romney, he just needs to present a more compelling vision of what he wants to do with foreign policy of the united states. he has talked about military modernization, governor romney has, and maintaining the strength of our fleet and air forces. i think governor romney is right about that. president obama -- this goes direct your question -- has a very modern view of how to use the military. i think he decided quickly after taking office that he would take us out of iraq, which he did in december 2011, after building up and afghanistan with the surge began drawing down and said that most of our combat troops would be out by 2014. we fought two major land wars simultaneously with hundreds of thousands of troops involved. we have never done that before in american history, with the exception of the second world war. i think president obama wants to avoid the land wars if we can in the future and use the cooperative -- imperative advantage we have, and our air power, at sea power, and special forces. it has been effecti

believe that government has a responsibility to care for them? >> of course not. i agree with mitt romney when he says his comments were poorly phrased. keefe said they were in elegantly stated. i think there is a difference. part of the philosophy of president obama is trying to get as many americans as possible dependent on government so that the democrats can stay in power in perpetuity. the reason i think that is failing is, even those americans, if you break down that 47%, there is a significant chunk of people, receiving social security, who have paid into it their entire life. that is very different from being dependent on welfare. that is a critical safety net our society has counted on that we need to insure remain strong for generations to come. even those who are receiving welfare right now, most americans do not want to stay dependent on government. they want to work for the american dream. they want to work to provide for themselves and their families. i think that is why the obama administration's objective is essentially using bread and circuses to make as many people as po

a lot of good about romney, thanks to some of those negative ads. romney's campaign has been outspent about 2-1 by the president in the swing states, so in the debate, rom know can talk to those voters, give specifics and contrast that with the president's record. for "cbs this morning," i'm jan crawford in denver. >> both candidates are trying to protect themselves from any verbal slip-ups. that kind of moment did not happen very often. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, norah. well, look, if the conventional wisdom is that the president is leading and the challenger, mitt romney, needs a game changer, here's the question. what will the debate do to maybe allow that? look, ever since the first debate ever in 1960, and the regular debates which began in 1976, these debates have produced a memorable number of gaffes, but few instances which really changed the outcome of an election. in 1980, president jimmy carter led governor ronald reagan in the polls, but one line from reagan in their only debate put carter on the defensive and became a mantra for future challengers to a
